Answers to FEA Exercises

Problem 1

Ac = 3.14 (0.6/2)2 = 0.28 in2

Lc = b / Cos(A) = 10 / Cos(30) = 11.5"

AcEc / Lc = 0.28 x 30 x 106 / 11.5 = 730 x 106

Problem 2

Ub = 150 / Cos(30) = 173.2 lb-f

We know Ua = -Ub

Considering the direction of the load, lets say Ua = 173.2, and Ub = -173.2

Thus,

fea-ex3.jpg (6916 bytes)

from which we get,

737x103ua - 737x103ub = 173.2

and

-737x103ua + 737x103ub = -173.2

Solving for the deformation (ua - ub), we get

(ua - ub) = 0.24x10-3"
