III COURSE DESCRIPTION
The study of basic automotive body structures relative to styling, safety, performance, comfort, and the overall engineering factors

The contents of this course are:
· History and the development of the automotive body
· Review of mathematical concepts
· Introduction to aerodynamics
· Technical presentation guidelines
· Internet for engineers
· Vehicle body structures and components
· Vehicle body engineering
· Safety and crash worthiness
· Introduction to finite element analysis
· Conference or plant visit
· Team projects

IV COURSE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
The goal of Body Structures 1 is to familiarize the students with the engineering concepts that govern the design of the automotive body.  Further, this course emphasizes teamwork through joint project research, documentation and presentation.

The objectives of Body Structures 1 are:
· Learn about the origins and historical development of the automotive body
· Review basic mathematical concepts in preparation for simple engineering analysis
· Learn about aerodynamic forces and their impact on the styling, NVH, and performance
· Learn about the automotive body components
· Learn about safety and crash worthiness characteristics of the automotive body
· Develop a basic understanding of finite element method for analysis of body structures
· Learn about the engineering resources available on the Internet

V METHODOLOGY
This course uses the following methods to teach automotive engineering concepts:
· Class presentation and demonstrations
· Off site and/or conference visit
· Homework
· Internet research
· Class project (team-oriented)
· Mid-term quiz
· Final examination

· Session 1 History of automotive body design
· Session 2 Math review

· 5 homework assignments, due dates will be announced in advance
· 1 project (to be completed by teams), various deadlines and milestones will be announced in advance

VII CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION
Type of Performance:

Quiz: 15%, Open book
Homework: 15%, must be delivered on-time, 50% penalty for late delivery
Project: 30%
Final Exam: 30%, open book, project teams

Evaluation Criteria:
The performance of the students will be measured along the following dimensions:
· Grasp of engineering concepts
· Analytical approach to problem solving
· Respect for schedule and deadlines
· Teamwork

Late Assignments:
50% penalty for late assignments

Make-Ups and Rewrites:
Make-ups and rewrites are permitted in cases of personal or family emergency, or conditions beyond the student's control

The student is required to contact the instructor as soon as possible to make any necessary arrangements.

· Attendance sheets must be signed
· On-time arrival required.
· Absences must be justified in writing with valid excuse.

Students must complete their homework, quiz, and examinations without receiving unfair assistance from others or using unethical methods.  Any cheating will automatically result in the grade E in this class.

Incomplete: The Incomplete (I) is a temporary grade used in cases when a student is unable to complete course requirements because of illness or other justifiable circumstances.  An Incomplete (I) is assigned in cases in which the student has completed satisfactorily the major portion (50%) of the course requirements and has the ability to complete the remaining work without re-registering for the course.  Further information on Incomplete (I) can be found in the current Bulletin.
